myQ is Chamberlain Group's smart app for LiftMaster and Chamberlain garage door openers. When it works, it's great — open the door for a delivery driver, check the door status from work. When it doesn't, it's aggravating. Here are the verified fixes for the eight most common myQ problems, straight from Chamberlain Group's support docs.
1. The Router Bounced. Just Reconnect.
Most "myQ suddenly stopped working" calls trace to a router restart. myQ Wi-Fi openers connect to your Wi-Fi on 2.4 GHz only. If your ISP swapped your router or you changed your Wi-Fi password, the opener has to be reconnected. Chamberlain publishes a straightforward reconnection guide: Chamberlain Group — Reconnect to myQ after Router Changes.
2. 2.4 GHz vs. 5 GHz — the #1 Setup Bug
If your router uses "band steering" (broadcasts a single SSID that combines 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz), your phone often hands off to 5 GHz during myQ setup and the opener — which is 2.4 GHz only — can't be found on the same network. The fix: temporarily disable 5 GHz or separate the SSIDs (name them "MyNetwork_2G" and "MyNetwork_5G") during pairing. Once paired, re-enable band steering.
3. Clear the Opener's Wi-Fi Settings
If the opener won't connect at all, wipe its Wi-Fi memory and re-add it.
On a Wi-Fi-enabled opener (current LiftMaster or Chamberlain Wi-Fi models): press and hold the black adjustment button between the UP and DOWN arrows on the motor head until the LED turns off. The opener's Wi-Fi settings are cleared. Re-add in the myQ app. Source: Chamberlain Group — Clear Wi-Fi Settings on myQ Wi-Fi Product.
On a myQ Smart Garage Hub (the add-on for older openers): press and hold the Settings (gear) button on the hub until the blue LED blinks. For a full factory reset, while the LED is blinking, press and hold Settings again until the hub beeps. Source: Chamberlain Group — Factory Reset a myQ Device.
4. Check the Motor Head's Wi-Fi LED
Most modern Wi-Fi openers have a Wi-Fi status LED on the motor head. Green solid = connected. Blinking = trying to connect. Off = no Wi-Fi configured. If the LED is off, the opener has no Wi-Fi credentials — time to re-pair.
5. Force-Close the App and Sign Back In
Sometimes the myQ app itself gets stuck. Force-close on your phone (swipe away from the recent apps list), reopen, sign back in. About 20% of "app offline" issues clear on a fresh session.
6. Firmware Updates
myQ pushes firmware updates automatically over Wi-Fi. If your opener is showing weird behavior after Chamberlain releases an update, give it 24 hours — sometimes the rollout completes overnight when you're not commanding the door. If problems persist beyond a day or two, contact Chamberlain support — the app tells you your firmware version under the device details.
7. Amazon Key, Google, Alexa Integrations
When myQ pushes an app update, third-party integrations sometimes need to be re-linked. In each third-party app (Amazon, Google Home, Alexa), remove and re-add the myQ integration. Feature availability and subscription requirements for third-party integrations change — check the current status at myq.com before assuming a feature is free.
8. When to Just Replace the Opener
If your opener is older than 10 years and the myQ features are why you want it working, replacing the opener with a current LiftMaster or Chamberlain Wi-Fi model is often smarter than fighting the older hardware. New units pair in under 5 minutes with Bluetooth-assisted setup (Security+ 3.0 openers, 2025+).
