There are several distinct resets on a Chamberlain garage door opener, and they solve completely different problems. Doing the wrong one wastes an hour. Here's how to identify which one you need in 30 seconds — then step-by-step for each. Every procedure below is verified against Chamberlain's official support documentation (linked at each step).
1. First: Identify Your Opener's LEARN Button
The LEARN button lives on the motor unit — the powerhead mounted to your garage ceiling — usually on the back or side, near the antenna wire. Its shape and color tell you which security generation you have, which changes what remotes and keypads will pair with it. Chamberlain's official identifier chart:
- Round yellow LEARN — Security+ 2.0, models built 2011–2022.
- Round white LEARN — Security+ 3.0 (2025 and newer), adds Bluetooth for setup.
- Purple or brown LEARN — Security+ (315 MHz), models built 2005–2014.
- Red or orange LEARN — Security+ (390 MHz), models built 1997–2004.
- Green LEARN — Billion Code (390 MHz), 1993–1997.
- Square yellow, gray, or white LEARN — pre-1993 DIP-switch opener; consider upgrading (no rolling code, no myQ, generally not repair-worthy).

2. Factory Reset (Wipes All Remotes and Keypads)
Use this when you moved in and inherited an unknown opener, the opener is behaving erratically, or you want to wipe every paired remote and keypad before selling the house.
How: Press and hold the LEARN button on the motor unit until the LED next to it turns off — about 6 seconds. All remote controls and keypads are erased from the opener's memory and must be reprogrammed. Source: Chamberlain Group — Erase Remote Controls.
Important: This wipes what's stored on the opener itself. It does not remove the opener from your myQ cloud account — that's a separate reset described below.
3. Program a Remote (Add or Replace)
Use this when you bought a new car and need a HomeLink or replacement remote to work, or when you're adding a second remote to a family car.
How: Press and release the LEARN button once. The LED glows steadily. Within 30 seconds, press and hold the button on the remote until the opener lights flash or you hear two clicks. Release. The remote is paired.
Note: some third-party universal remotes require three presses instead of one press-and-hold — follow the universal remote's own instructions if you're not using a genuine Chamberlain or LiftMaster remote.
4. Keypad PIN Reset (Change the Exterior Code)
Use this when you don't know the exterior keypad code, or you want to change it after a housekeeper or contractor leaves.
How: Press and release the LEARN button on the opener. On the keypad, enter your new 4-digit PIN and press ENTER. The keypad light flashes to confirm. If your keypad model behaves differently, follow the printed instructions on the keypad's battery cover — procedures vary by model year.
5. Travel Limit Reset (Door Won't Fully Close or Open)
Use this when the door reverses before hitting the floor, or stops short at the top. This usually means the opener has forgotten its up and down positions — often after a power surge.
On Security+ 2.0 openers (2011–2022, round yellow LEARN), the travel adjustment is done using the UP and DOWN arrow buttons on the motor head, together with the black adjustment button between them. Because the exact button sequence varies by model, check the sticker inside your opener's light cover or your owner's manual for the specific steps on your unit — using the wrong sequence can throw the door out of balance.
6. myQ Wi-Fi / Cloud Reset
Use this when the myQ app can't find your opener, or you want to re-add the opener to a different Wi-Fi network.
On a Wi-Fi–enabled opener (e.g., current LiftMaster/Chamberlain Wi-Fi models): press and hold the black adjustment button located between the UP and DOWN arrows on the motor head until the LED turns off. Source: Chamberlain Group — Clear Wi-Fi Settings on myQ Wi-Fi Product.
On a myQ Smart Garage Hub (the add-on that adds Wi-Fi to an older opener): press and hold the Settings (gear) button on the hub until the blue LED blinks. For a full factory reset, while the LED is blinking, press and hold Settings again until the hub beeps. Source: Chamberlain Group — Factory Reset a myQ Device.
7. When None of These Fix It
If you've reset everything and the opener still misbehaves, the logic board is likely damaged — common after summer voltage spikes in DFW. Board replacement runs a fair repair-vs-replace call: if your opener is 12+ years old (and probably discontinued), full replacement usually costs less than the board and gives you a modern smart-connected unit.
